Abstract:

This paper reports a longitudinal research study to explore the relationship among students’ academic self concept, effort in study, performance in internal assessments and achievement in public examinations throughout their two years of study of students in a matriculation school. The school conducted such a study with an aim of informing the learning and teaching effectiveness through analysis of assessment of students’ performance in internal assessments and explore ways of improving students’ learning through analysis of various assessments. To conduct the analysis, the School collected data from students’ examination results in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Examination prior to joining the School, all the internal examination in F 6 and F 7, and students’ achievement in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations. In addition to the examination results, the academic self concept and effo! rt in study of students as measured by questionnaires are collected in each academic year. Through longitudinal structural equation modeling analysis, a structural model with significant relationship among various factors was established. Analysis of value-added performance of students in internal examinations and public examinations as well as the teaching effect as measured by performance of students taught by each teacher was also conducted. Results of the analyses helps the School to make use of the assessment results to deploy teachers and conduct staff development as well as improving the academic performance of students.
