Towards using concept mapping to automatically score students’ answers to constructed response items

Abstract: 

This study presents a novel approach to score students’ answers to constructed response items in an automatic manner with very minor supervised training. The reference framework according to which the grading is performed is a corporate concept map constructed based on the students’ responses. We will explain the rationale behind this approach together with a delineation of how the concept map can be constructed. The discussion will be illustrated with an example in relation to Taiwan students’ responses on an ozone layer problem from the TIMSS study. A discussion regarding several technical issues of this approach as well as some directions for future study will be given at the end of the paper.
